Buying vintage golf clubs that still play

Good old clubs still play. A persimmon driver, a forged blade or a classic putter can go round after round, as long as it’s sound where it counts. Here’s what to check on an older club before you buy it.

Can you still play a vintage golf club?

Usually, yes. What makes a club play is the head, the shaft and the grip, and good photos show you a lot about all three. Age alone doesn’t retire a club. Damage does.

What should I check on an older club?

  • Shaft: in the photos, look along a steel shaft for rust, pitting and bends, especially near the hosel. A little surface discoloration is common. A bend or deep pitting is worth asking about before you buy.
  • Grip: old grips harden, crack and go slick. That’s normal, and a new grip is a common fix. Count it in if you plan to play the club.
  • Face: look for wear in the middle of the face and along the grooves. Wear means the club got played. Check the edges for chips or dents.
  • Wooden heads: on a persimmon wood, look closely at the neck, the narrow part where the head meets the shaft. Cracks there can hide under the whipping, the thread wrapped around it. Check that the face insert and the sole plate sit tight and flush, with their screws in place. Light finish wear is normal on a wood that’s been played. A crack, bare wood on the face, or a loose insert or plate is worth asking about.

Should I play it or collect it?

Both are good reasons to buy an old club. If you plan to play it, focus on the shaft and the head. If you’re collecting, the original grip, finish and markings matter more, so look closely at those in the photos.
